Executive Director, Head of Medicinal Chemistry

About Us

At Ventus, we are pioneering a unique approach to structure-based drug discovery to address biologically validated, but elusive, drug targets.  Using two platforms, we expand the set of targets amenable to small-molecule medicines including targets which have never been drugged and others for which existing chemical matter leaves significant room for improvement.

We are rapidly advancing a pipeline of new medicines to treat autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, neurological disorders, and cancer. Our most advanced programs are enabled by our structural biology and computational chemistry capabilities that unlock rational, structure-based drug discovery for nodal targets in innate immune pathways. In addition, our ReSOLVE platform reveals novel druggable sites for targets thought to be beyond the reach of small molecule medicines, allowing us to expand our pipeline into oncology and neurology.

Our team includes experienced biopharmaceutical executives and scientists who have delivered multiple approved medicines and luminary academics spanning the fields of structural biology, immunology, and computational chemistry.

In April 2021, it was announced that Ventus Therapeutics closed US $100 million Series B financing led by RA Capital Management with participation from a select syndicate including BVF Partners L.P., Casdin Capital, Cormorant Asset Management, Fonds de solidarité FTQ, and Alexandria Venture Investments. Founding investor Versant Ventures also participated in the round, as did existing investor GV (formerly Google Ventures).

A Unique Opportunity in a Fast-growing Organization

Ventus is seeking a highly motivated experienced chemist to lead our medicinal chemistry team. We are looking for a talented, collaborative, and dynamic scientist to support our research efforts, and advance and grow our pipeline of preclinical programs. This role is a unique opportunity to contribute to a well-funded start-up, using breakthrough science to drug previously challenging targets.  While the ideal candidate would be located in, or be willing to relocate to Montreal, candidates preferring to reside in the Boston area but willing to travel regularly (>1 week per month; after COVID restrictions are lifted) would be considered.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of medicinal chemists and oversee the medicinal chemistry efforts on all our pipeline targets, from hit identification to candidate selection
  • Provide input during the target selection stage for targets under consideration for pipeline expansion
  • Work with our computational chemistry department to continue to grow our ReSOLVE platform
  • Manage internal and external resources to achieve project goals
  • Interact with senior company leaders to help drive chemistry strategy and new scientific initiatives

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. with 12+ years of experience in biotechnology and/or pharma companies
  • Demonstrated experience leading medicinal chemistry programs into the clinic
  • Demonstrated ability to manage external teams efficiently
  • Broad scientific experience as evidenced by a strong publication record and numerous filed/granted patent applications across multiple programs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work both independently and within a team
  • Ability to meet complex objectives under aggressive timelines in a rapidly changing environment
  • Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in analyzing data, and addressing technical challenges using analytical and problem-solving skills

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Proficiency in modern structure-based drug design techniques
  • Experience driving programs with affinity-based methods such as SPR is an asset
  • Prior experience in immunology, immuno-oncology or neurodegeneration is an asset

Ventus offers competitive benefits and compensation programs including incentive-based stock and cash bonus programs in addition to a collaborative, academic and scientific based culture.  If you would like to contribute to cutting edge science and be part of a innovative and team based company, send CVs to
